How to Host a Wedding on Private Property
The house doesn't need to accommodate 150 people.
The property does.
That's an important distinction when considering a wedding at a family estate, ranch, farm or private piece of land.
You don't necessarily need permanent event infrastructure. You need to determine what can be brought in temporarily.
What Does the Property Already Have?
Begin with an infrastructure audit.
Consider access, electricity, water, bathrooms, parking, drainage, level ground, catering access and emergency routes.
Then separate what exists from what the event requires.
The gap becomes your temporary venue plan.
Don't Start With the Pretty Stuff
Chandeliers and flowers are fun.
Power distribution and restroom capacity are less glamorous, but they're what allow the pretty things to work.
Before designing tablescapes, establish:
- Where guests enter
- How vehicles circulate
- Where catering operates
- Where bathrooms go
- How structures are anchored
- Where power comes from
- What happens during bad weather
- How guests leave safely at night
Once those questions are solved, design becomes much easier.
Use Multiple Spaces
One advantage of private property is that you aren't confined to a ballroom.
Create movement.
Guests can arrive in one location, attend the ceremony somewhere dramatic, move to cocktails in another setting and discover the reception afterward.
That progression makes even familiar family property feel completely different.
Consider Keeping Guests Overnight
If the property is large enough, accommodations can become part of the event.
A temporary canvas camp allows guests to stay close to the celebration while creating an entirely new experience on the land.
Add comfortable beds, linens, lighting, bathrooms, pathways and communal gathering areas and you're effectively creating a temporary hotel.
Hire for Remote-Event Experience
Private-property events have different logistical demands than traditional venues.
Your vendors should understand temporary power, weather, access, installation, remote catering and guest movement.
